KINESIOLOGICAL SCIENCES
The BACHELOR OF
SCIENCE degree in Kinesiological Sciences has as its focus the
study of human performance. Thus, it includes foundation
sciences such as anatomical kinesiology, biomechanics, exercise
physiology, motor behavior, and the social-pyschology of physical
activity. Kinesiological Sciences requires completion of core course
work in kinesiology, the university general education requirements,
and the area of specialization. There are two specialization tracks students can work towards:
- Comprehensive
- Allied Health
- Fitness Management
Kinesiological Sciences - Allied Health
The Allied Health specialization option provides education and training for students who wish to prepare for advanced study in medicine, physical therapy, or other health or allied health fields.
Kinesiological Sciences - Comprehensive
The Comprehensive specialization option provides students the opportunity to pursue basic and applied studies of the physiological, biomechanical, and social-psychological aspects of human movement and performance.
Kinesiological Sciences - Fitness Management
The Fitness Management specialization option provides education and training in the implementation and direction of physical fitness and conditioning programs in both the public and private sectors.
ATHLETIC TRAINING
The BACHELOR OF SCIENCE degree in Athletic Training is a competitive degree program designed for students interested in the prevention and treatment of injuries related to the active population. Students completing the Athletic Training major graduate from an undergraduate accredited program (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
Upon graduation, students are eligible to sit for the Board of Certification examination to become a Certified Athletic Trainer. In addition to completing core courses in kinesiology and the university general
education requirements, students will complete course work in basic and advanced
athletic training, therapeutic exercise and modalities, evaluation and rehabilitation
of upper and lower extremities, and other sports medicine related topics.
In addition to classroom preparation, on-the-field experience is required. The successful student must be willing to make the personal sacrifice and commitment to spending many hours working in the athletic training facility. Upper division students are assigned to varsity sports and each is responsible for assisting a certified athletic trainer in the medical care of student-athletes in a particular sport.
