The Annual Meeting for the Southwest Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (SWACSM) will be held on November 14th and 15th, 2008 at the San Diego Mission Valley Marriot, San Diego, California.  Several graduate students and faculty from the department will be attending the conference to present current research results.

Inside the Black Box

Adina Mornell, a concert pianist and professor of music pedagogy at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Graz (Austria), gave a presentation, entitled "Inside the black box: The psychobiological factors of stage fright" on September 9, 2008.

Athletic Training News

  • Students and Faculty from the Athletic Training Edcuation Program were part of the Medical Team for the 2006 Las Vegas Marathon. Several students and faculty were responsible for identifying and helping finishers who needed medical asssistance.

Student Highlight

During the summer, several graduate students gave presentations at the national conferences for the American College of Sports Medicine as well as the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity.

North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity

  • Carolina Granados gave a presentation titled "Enhancing motor learning through dyad practice: Contributions of observation and dialogue." Dr. Gaby Wulf was co-author.

  • Janet Griffin gave a presentation titled "Surface variations alter the prediction of shock attenuation for female runners." Co-authors were Dr. Janet Dufek, Dr. John Mercer, Kaori Teramoto, and David DeLion.

  • Masa Teramoto presented his poster titled "Muscle contraction during vascular occlusion: Effect on muscle activity." Co-authors were Dr. John Mercer and Dr. Larry Golding.

  • Student Highlight

Congratulations to Janet Griffin (Kinesiology Graduate Student) who earned a Poster Award during the 2006 Graduate Research Forum for her presentation titled "Comparison of heel impact characteristics between the Nike Free 5.0 and Asics TN 465 running shoe."

  • Graduate Research Forum

    There were several Kinesiology graduate students presenting their research at the Graduate Research Forum. Pictured at right (from left to right) are Anthony House, Kaori Teramoto, Katie Orzechowski, Masa Teramoto, Janet Grifin, and Amanda Tritsch. One of our graduate alumni, Tiffany Zachry, also attended the research forum. Tiffany is currently working on her doctoral degree at the University of Hong Kong.

  • Acute Injury Care for the Weekend Warrior
    Dr. Mack Rubley gave a University Forum presentation addressing the injury prevention and rehabilitation for the weekend athlete.

    "Treatment of athletic injury for the recreational athlete consists of more than just putting some ice on it. Come discuss proper injury management, learn when to get advanced medical attention, and the appropriate steps for returning to the recreational or fitness activity level that caused injury in the first place."
  • Student Highlight
    Congratulations to Roxanne Sanchez (MS Exercise Physiology, 2005) for her presentation at the regional meeting for the South West chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (SWACSM). Her presentation titled "Effect of a high protein diet on glucose tolerance in rats" was nominated for the SWACSM student award. Roxanne is currently a doctoral student in the Department of Anthropology.
